I had the immense pleasure of being able to participate. After finally getting unpacked and settled in the new house, I really needed something to kickstart my mojo. April Rhodes Bound fabric was more than enough to do the trick.

While staring at my Bound fat quarter bundle, I really wanted to create something that felt free, away from the typical lines we stick to. Triangles aren't all that different, but my process was. I started cutting without a firm final vision, and let the quilt design itself. Here is the final product.

Everything about these colors was very soothing and natural to me. They also spoke of the southwest. It was that desert influence that led my triangles to become little peaks and valleys.

Here she is in all her glory. Being over 80" long, she was very very hard to photograph.

I tried to capture the quilting the best I could, but it is so hard to show quilting on white. I was thrilled with how it turned out. There are two triangles, one from the top and one from the bottom, that overlap to create a diamond. The rest of the lines echo from those triangles. I think the quilting really brought the feel of the quilt together.

As fall rolls in in most states, it is still sort of summer here in SC. It's what we consider fall, but I'm not sure 70 degrees is what most people consider fall. Thank you Art Gallery for having me on your tour! I look forward to seeing all of your fabulous fall lines as they continue to debut!

Glad to know blogger hasn't changed enough that I can't figure out how to post. I had the pleasure of making a quilt on the Blog Tour to celebrate Stash Fabrics having all 303 Kona colors in stock!! I actually had a panic because I thought I was supposed to post yesterday, and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get my photos.
Luckily I did! Here is my quilt. It is made up of 10 Kona colors and a couple Cotton and Steel prints that mimic the color scheme. Guess what? You can get my bundle and all of the other bundles curated by the blog tour participants at Stash Fabrics. Beth has even been so kind to offer a 10% discount when you use coupon code WOW303 through September 6.
Another great thing that you really don't want to miss! Beth is starting a Kona Club that can help you build an amazing collection of solids if yours is not well rounded. Since they stock every color of Kona, the club will set you up to have the colors you need for almost every project! It is a fantastic way to build your solid stash without having to wonder if you are picking a good variety of colors.
On Easter morning (we think), he went missing. It was utterly devastating. For the first few days, everyone said that he would be back, but my cat-mom gut knew something was wrong. It's been two weeks, and we still don't know where he is. I've called every vet and shelter, posted flyers, put his picture on Facebook, and talked to all the neighbors. We haven't seen any signs of him, dead or alive. We have had a few false alarms, so I am having a hard time finding any closure. Some part of me is clinging to the hope that he will be found. If you've never loved an animal so fully, I cannot explain how painful it is.

I am rather smitten with the quilt and with how to photos turned out. I have been hoping to shoot in this spot for a while, but I wasn't sure if it was allowed or considered trespassing. Yesterday morning, I got up the guts and we dashed out there, probably looking rather sketchy. It was worth it!
I had a lot of fun quilting this quilt because I really felt inspired to step outside the box. I chose to only quilt the negative space and use a design to echo the shape created with the color. What do you think?
And of course, none of these pictures would ever be possible without the best helper ever. I confess, I often orient the quilt the wrong way, or the sun is interfering, or a myriad of other things. The photos that Adham stages always turn out significantly better than mine. I am so grateful for his help, even though it is not his favorite task.
This one was high on my list. I love it, but I just never got around to joining the blocks. Or pulling off the stabilizer. Much like the paper used in paper piecing, I hate having to pull things off of the back of quilt blocks.

I actually joined the blocks a little differently than the pattern calls for. Rather than put sashing between all the blocks, I offset the flowers in each row a little differently. I like the end effect. Now I just need to get a turn on mom's long arm to quilt it.
I was able to use the time I spent confined to a car for work to pull the stabilizer from both this quilt and the paper from another. I was that bored. I am not sure I would have ever gotten it done if it had not literally been the ONLY thing to do.
We also have been getting used to having this guy back. He is quite the hunter....and often I am the prey. It has been sitting in my WIP pile for THREE YEARS. I made it in early 2012 when I was just beginning to learn how much quilting meant to me. It is/was for one of my best friends of all time. I had finished it by his birthday, revealed it via skype, and then told him it just needed binding. And for three years, it. just. needed. binding. Can you say worst friend ever?
So for his birthday, three years later, it is in the mail and should arrive on his doorstep. The color choices in the quilt were meant to represent the southwest landscape and sky. He loves it there. The pattern is by Fresh Lemon Quilts.
It is very weird to finish a quilt from so long ago. My skills have changed so much since then. To see my piecing and quilting from when I was relatively new years later gives such a weird perspective on how much you have learned.
I hope Yeager, his girlfriend, and their dog get lots of snuggles out of this quilt. I hope it goes with them on all of their adventures, and I hope it gets to see the world. Although I love the Liberty prints, the colors weren't anything that fit in around the house. Plus, I hate purple. So I hung it in the closet and thought about who in my life would appreciate it most. I am not sure why I didn't see it immediately, but the color scheme include all of my Grandma's favorite colors. Like exactly. Sooooo, I hung on to it and saved it for her 92nd birthday which was Feburary 6th. Her ninety second birthday! I can only hope those genes run through me.
I didn't have any yardage at the house for a back, so I pieced one out of, again, her favorite colors. Purple makes me nauseous, but she loves it, along with teal and pink. I was excited to gift her a quilt because it has become my version of 'art'. She not only passed down the artistic genes, but made sure we had a ton of art exposure as kids. I rather love having her in my life. Being among the youngest of the grandkids, I feel so lucky to have had nearly 30 years with her.
Seems to happen that way. On the third day of the new year, I got a call at 3am that my boyfriend had been in an accident and was being flown to the nearest trauma hospital. Excuse me, say what?!? Naturally, I jumped in the car and got my ass up to North Myrtle Beach (an hour away). All in all, for the nature of the accident, he was fine. A couple facial fractures and some road rash. He had crashed a friend's motorcycle. It could have been so much worse. So in the days following, we both agreed that his friend (who constantly harassed me about how he could get a quilt) probably deserved a quilt. I quickly got to work.
I generally do not make quilts in man colors, like ever. But these guys are firefighters, and I just don't think AMH was going to fly. I used Doe as my springboard, as it had just arrived, and happened to be incredibly gender neutral. Here is the resulting quilt!

I love it. Like bleeping love it. I honestly thought it was going to be incredibly hard to sew because the colors are so foreign to me.
What was hard was gifting it. I didn't expect parting with it to be such a challenge. The pattern is Bonnie Hunter's free Scrappy Trip. If you recall, it was crazy popular about two years ago. It goes together surprisingly fast. I backed it in Cotton and Steel Netorious in Teal. Something about the cotton used for the Cotton and Steel fabrics is luxuriously soft when washed. You can't help but snuggle with it.

I quilted it following the diagonals in the blocks, much like my first Scrappy Trip. It is bound using a gorgeous blue from Doe called Trellis. It had juuuuuust arrived in the mail. If I had had anything else that looked nearly as good as a binding, I would have hoarded it with all the others due to my current Doe love affair.

So today, I said goodbye. She is with her new owner, who I think loves her very much. I have only ever gifted quilts to my family, knowing I would see them many more times.
Parting with this one was oddly emotional. Not in a crying sort of way, but in a tugged at my heart sort of way. However, if I keep too many more quilts, Adham may start peddling them behind my back. We are sort of at max quilt capacity over here.

So here's to kicking off 2015 on a unique foot.
This was my first time using Kona Mushroom as a background, and I have to say I love it. It is the perfect mix of brown and gray. Although I love geometric quilts, I somehow have never found myself making a quilt out of triangles. I will definitely be using them more. I love the look, and it went together so smoothly!
My life has been crazy and my blogging erratic; however, I am headed into 2015 with no sewing commitments to anyone but myself. I feel that I have in some ways lost touch with why I started and have forgotten how to be creative for me. I am so excited to see what new things I get to make in 2015! Until then, I plan to knock out my WIP pile. It has gotten much too big. You know how that goes. I haven't worked with prints in a while, so the fabric pull was so fun and inspiring. I hope to finish piecing the top before the next pattern is available. Maybe I can even get some time on my mom's long arm!

I only have iphone photos of this quilt so far, but I was too excited to show you some progress to wait to photograph it with my good camera.
When deciding what shade I was, I quickly came to the conclusion that I am no one shade (although I am rather partial to teal). I love color, all color, too much to describe myself as just one. So! They kindly gave me a spectrum of color to play with and this is what happened!
The solids I used were 311, 287, 280, 279, 292, 349, 348, 291, 209, 276, 326, 228, 32, and 33. I also used some Cotton and Steel Basics because they read so well as solids. As far as design goes, I tried to add in bits and pieces of my personality. While the construction is very uniform and linear, the placement of color creates a chaos that keeps it interesting.
I offered to make comfort quilts for him, his wife, and his two young kids. Everyone on instagram stepped up and sent loads of lovely blocks that I paired with large pieces of fabric that I had in my stash.
I am so excited to see it done and on the couch! At this point, I only have 5 circles left to applique. At the moment though, I am sitting in front of my computer trying to distract myself from my itchy, poison ivy covered arms. Have I mentioned that I hate my job? Haha. Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3014054760942288678.post-63330818072069863712014-07-27T19:50:00.000-04:002014-07-27T19:50:00.266-04:00Follow the LeaderWarm weather brings quite a bit of outdoor work at my job. We are outside all year round, but they schedule a substantial portion of that for the summer months. That means up at 5, out the door by 6, and working by 7. Sometimes until as late as 7. So I am rather tired. That is why this post is so delayed.

If you are part of the Quick-Sew Baby Quilt Club, you should have already received Follow the Leader! Inspired by a quilt my mom made, it is the second in the Quick-Sew Baby series.
I also am in quite a pickle because somehow the charger for my good camera broke. I have had to resort to using my iphone! Ugh. Hopefully I will be able to replace it soon.Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3014054760942288678.post-77348569019749152752014-07-09T20:39:00.000-04:002014-07-09T20:39:43.208-04:00Facing East QAL Paper Piecing TutorialAre you making the Facing East Quilt with us? Just in case you are nervous about paper piecing, I wanted to show you how easy it is! In fact, it is almost easier than regular piecing. Think of it as painting by number....but with fabric.

Some important tools include very thin paper (you can use normal paper, thin paper just comes off more easily), an iron, a nearby lamp/window is suggested, and a ruler. Because there is a lot of ironing, I definitely suggest having an ironing station near your machine. That way, you don't have to get up and sit down so much.

So, cut out your pattern pieces. Be sure to leave a 1/4" seam allowance. Not all patterns have them built in around the edge. Luckily, the Facing East Templates do!

When you paper piece, you apply the fabric to each number in numerical order. So, for this pattern, we want to cut fabric pieces 1 and 2 first. Be sure to cut pieces that are a little larger than the area that they go on. In the pattern, Carolyn has you cut strips at specific widths. I suggest doing this because you don't have to think about how wide the strips need to be to cover each area, and you'll be likely to get full coverage each time. When you paper piece for the first time, a common error is misjudging how big your fabric should be. I always cut my pieces much larger than they need to be so that I don't have to pick out any seams.

Once you have pieces one and two cut, you are going to sew them to the template. Here is where a lot of people get hung up. You want to apply the pieces to the wrong side of the template so that you can sew along the lines on the right side. My tip is to use a light or a window to get your placement correct. Hold the template up to the light with the fabric behind it. Now you can see if your fabric is overhanging the line you are going to sew on and at the right angle.

Once you get that set, sew down the line using a small stitch length. Again, a small stitch length is suggested to help the paper come of easily. The more you perforate the paper, the less you have to tug at it to get it to come off. I usually set mine at 1.5.

Another tip is to make sure you take one or two stitches over the lines that the seam intersects. This will ensure that when you go over those lines later, you will lock those seams.

Once you finish your seam, fold the paper back and trim the seam allowance to a 1/4". This reduces the bulk in your block. After that, iron the seam open and flat.

Simple, right? Now repeat the process. Lay your fabric for segment 3 over the area and cut your over-sized piece.

Again, sew it on to the wrong side of the template. Here you may notice the importance of the light more. Piece two is likely much larger than it needs to be. If you line up piece 3 with the edge of piece 2, you will have a lot of waste or it may not be at the correct angle for your seam. Hold the paper up to the light and use the shadow of the fabric to help line it up with the line you are planning to stitch. If I had more hands, I would have taken a picture of this step. Unfortunately, I only have the two.

Same process here. Fold the paper back, trim the seam down to 1/4", and iron piece 3 flat.

Continue this process with all of the segments. Soon, your blocks will start to come together! Above, you can see I have added piece 4.

When I paper piece, I do 4 or 5 blocks at a time. Sew pieces 1 and 2 on all 5 blocks, then move on to piece 3, and so on. This speeds up the process quite a bit.

I can't wait to see this finished! This pattern is so fun to use your creativity with. It has so much potential. I hope you quilt along with us on instagram! I can't wait to see your quilts in progress.
In other news, this girl bought her first car! I finally traded in the 1997 4runner (225,000 miles, been driving it for 11 years) for a 2008 4runner. Doubt I'll ever get another kind of car.
Aren't they so saturated and lovely? I was so inspired by my Botanics coordinating Kona bundle that I needed to cut into it. My copy of Savor Each Stitch doesn't come for another week, so I decided to make something small to showcase the colors.
A wall hanging it is! I saw this lovely go by a few weeks ago and wanted to make it so badly. Luckily, she posted this tutorial, and talked me into it on Instagram. She is so nice!
This is where I stopped last night. Hopefully I can get it bound and on the wall this week! I am soooo excited for some relaxing and sewing over the long weekend. Carolyn Friedlander. She's basically amazing. If you have never seen her stuff, she is the designer behind Architextures and Botanics. I have actually been obsessed with her work since Architextures was released. It is just sooo original! And now, she is releasing an awesome book called Savor Each Stitch!

I got to peak at the book, and this quilt stole my breath. It is called Facing East. I knew right away that I needed to make it and had a couple friends jump on board with me. Then Carolyn decided she was going to quilt along with us, and we decided to make it a little more formal!

This will not be your typical formal quilt along though. A large part of the participation will be on instagram using #facingeastqal. Stephanie and I will do posts about the different techniques used in the quilt, but giveaways and prizes will be chosen from the #facingeastqal hashtag. If you have never used instagram, I promise, it is really easy and fun!

I am using the Botanics Kona Coordinates for my quilt. They are here, but I am still waiting on my copy of Savor Each Stitch. It releases July 2. Hurry hurry hurry book!!!!!!!
And, if you want to go ahead and buy your fabric while you wait on your book, Carolyn so graciously provided us with this materials list.
I can't wait to get started! Hope you join us!Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3014054760942288678.post-63349328517778604622014-06-27T17:07:00.001-04:002014-06-27T17:07:30.710-04:00OAMM: Month 2I have had so many people asking me how my OAMM (Once A Month Meals) adventure is going on Instagram, I thought I would start giving monthly status updates here. That way I can give a ton of detail, and not bombard the feeds of people who don't care.

First up, last month. Here is what I made:
- Beef Stir Fry with Snap Peas - awesome
- Blackened Tilapia Fish Tacos - would have been good, but I bought a REALLY low grade fish. Mistake 1.
- BLT Pasta - our favorite recipe so far. I did not add all of the chicken broth though because I like a thicker sauce.
- Crockpot hawaiian chicken - good, very summery
- Grilled Cilantro Lime Chicken - great! I ate mine in salads
- Honey Balsamic Garlic Chicken - awesome
- Lemon Caper Tilapia Packets - good, but again, the fish I bought ruined them for us.
- Lemon Chicken Asparagus Pasta - We actually haven't eaten it yet!
- Paleo Stuffed Portabello Mushrooms - We did not like this at all. This was the one we considered a fail.
- Paleo Swedish Meatballs and Gravy - Great, but I think I would leave out the celery salt. I also added heavy cream to the gravy.
- Skillet Spaghetti Pie - this one had great flavor, but I think they called for a dish that was way too big. By the time it was heated through, it was dry. Next time, I will use a smaller dish.
- Smokey Monterrey Jack Burgers - Great

Ok, so if you wanted to know what we ate and how we liked it, there you go! As far as how everything held up in the freezer, I was surprised at how successful it all was. Even the pasta defrosted great. The only one that was 'weird' was my gravy for the meatballs. The cornstarch was not thrilled to mix in the second time around. It was still delicious though.

Lemon Caper Tilapia

The other thing that isn't super clear until you start doing it, is that you don't prepare an entire meal and then freeze it. More often than not, you are prepping the main portion of the dish. After you defrost it, it generally takes less than 10 minutes to cook, during which you can also prepare a veggie and a starch. Not every meal is like that. Some are casseroles or entire dishes, but you are not creating homemade versions of lean cuisine. You still serve a fresh, not soggy, not obviously reheated dinner (or breakfast/lunch) to your family.

My number one TIP would be regarding thawing. Either I have a cold fridge, or the thaw sheet isn't 100% accurate. I would absolutely suggest taking the meal you want to eat from the freezer to the fridge the night before rather than the morning of. Basically, try to give it a full 24 hours in the fridge, not 12.

Cilantro Lime Chicken in a Salad

Best Feature? The labels. Anyone in your family can take a meal out of the freezer and know exactly how to prepare it. It can even be a great way to get kids involved in the cooking if you trust them. Haha.

My other suggestions would be to read the first timer tips they send out via email and actually follow them. They are so right. I ignored almost all of them and did not have a pen at the grocery store, did not prep ahead of time, did not wear comfy shoes, and somehow forgot to eat breakfast and lunch. If you do the opposite of everything I did, you will be golden.

How did I like it, one month later? I loved it. I absolutely loved it. And I am not just saying that. It removed SO MUCH 'what are we going to eat tonight' stress from my life. It was the equivalent of having a chef. I basically came home to a meal that took minimal time and effort to create, but was still delicious. Often, it was something we otherwise would not have eaten because I could not fit the prep or planning into my schedule. This has truly changed my life. I love to cook, I just don't have the time. This allows me to still eat wonderful homemade stuff, without having to kill myself doing it.

Paleo Swedish Meatballs

Exhaustingly busy. Obviously, since I haven't been blogging. I melted down a little (a lot) the other day, and realized I had to change something because I was just stretched way too thin. Luckily, at that exact time, my friend Cori was talking about her adventures with Once A Month Meals. No shit. Once a month cooking. I HATE cooking when I get home from work. I love to cook in general, but not after work. I can do breakfast and lunch, but I am too tired to care by dinner.

I tossed around the idea of freezer cooking, tried out the website. I got really frustrated. (I convinced myself I didn't like the recipes and the website was 'too hard'). I went back to the website on a calmer day, and then after a little patience, figured it out (it's not hard, I was in meltdown mode). It was the perfect solution. At first, I didn't like the prepared menus. They have traditional, whole foods, paleo, diet, vegetarian, baby, gluten free/dairy free, and mini menus, but no complete menu spoke to me. Once I figured out how to customize a menu to fit my tastes though, I was hooked.

The website auto populates shopping lists, prep instructions, cooking day instructions, labels, thaw instructions, storage instructions...basically everything. After my shopping day, I figured out that I spent only about 40% of what I usually spend on groceries in a month. Yes. I cut my bill by 60%!!! For an entire month of dinners!!!! (breakfast for me is yogurt and lunch is leftovers) And did I mention there was no effort involved on my part?

Now that I was invested, I had to see it through. Cooking day arrived. It was time for effort. With 12 hours of cooking ahead of me, I told myself it was worth it. This is my clean kitchen.

My first 7 recipes were easy. They were 'no cook' which basically means I make a delicious marinade and/or cut up all of the veggies that go in the dish (if you are smart you cut everything the night before like they tell you to), throw it all in a bag, and throw it in the freezer. 3.5 hours and 7 meals down. Boom.
Are these labels not perfect? Even Adham, having not be in on the planning, can pull any meal out of the freezer and know exactly how to prepare it. The website generates these babies. Genius.
So my last 5 meals all involved some cooking. My remaining hours were quickly consumed. Above is the sauce for my BLT pasta (which I ate tonight. so good!). I also had to make stuffed mushrooms, meatballs, a lemon asparagus pasta, and a spaghetti bake. Sounds easy, but it was kinda involved. Particularly the mushrooms. They were rough. I think if I hadn't had them on my menu, I could have been done in 9 hours. O well.
This is what my kitchen was looking like right about when my feet were about to blow off my body, and I realized I hadn't eaten breakfast or lunch. Poor choice. I quickly went out for Chick Fil A, took a 20 minute power nap, and was back at it.
Each thing I put in the freezer made me feel so accomplished. I don't really have words as to why. I just knew I was setting us up to eat well I guess, and that I wouldn't be resorting to spaghetti, tacos, and greek chicken because I was tired.

And then at 7:00 PM (11 hours into my cooking day), I was done. And I had an ENTIRE month of meals prepared. And they all fit in my freezer. And I was so pleased with myself, so proud. I felt like I could do anything.
I had made quite the mess, but I didn't care. Adham brought home a movie, and I finished just in time to sit down with my ice cream and crash. An exhausting, exhilarating, productive day.

After the first week of eating out of my freezer, I can tell you that it has been amazing. I have all this time that I don't even really know what to do with. I can relax (what is that?). And I am not eating the same old gross, boring, easy to make when I am tired food. Once A Month Meals has done me such a favor, I cannot begin to thank them enough. My mom has even jumped on the train. She will be having her first cook day tomorrow!Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3014054760942288678.post-86615044137564823142014-06-01T07:37:00.000-04:002014-06-23T19:14:01.654-04:00Quick-Sew Baby Quilt ClubI am so excited to announce the Quick-Sew Baby Quilt Club! I have been working hard to get everything ready for the past couple months, and the day is finally here!

What is it?
The Quick-Sew Baby Quilt Club is a series of 6 patterns delivered to you monthly via email that are tailored to be easy baby quilts that you can whip out in an afternoon. I have so many friends having babies that I just don't have time to make each one a time consuming quilt. I needed a solution, so I found myself designing these quick-sew quilts. By being quick-sew, they don't lose any of the beauty of a modern handmade quilt, the piecing and layout is just designed to be speedy.

Pricing?
Early sign up pricing from June 1- June 8 will be a one time price of $20.00. If you sign up after June 8, it will be a one time price of $25.00 (for 6 patterns!)

When Does it Start?
Patterns will be delivered on the 15th of each month, with the first one arriving on June 15.

What if I sign up After June 15?
If you sign up in late June, July, August, or even December, you will have any pattern that has already been released delivered to you on the day of sign up. Any patterns that have not been released will be sent on the 15th of each coming month.

Time Commitment?
No! :) This is not a club where you must sew-along. You are absolutely welcome to sew each quilt as they come out and share with us, but it is not a have to. This club is designed to provide you with patterns in your arsenal that allow you to whip out beautiful, handmade items without such a lofty time commitment whenever a need arises.

I knew the minute I saw this quilt in the Color Intensive Class advertising pictures that I NEEDED the pattern. Not want or like, but NEEDED. It's bold and bright yet subtle in its complex geometry. It is called the Ikat Quilt.
Because the pattern designer is who she is, this pattern is worth the price and more, as per usual. It comes with two different methods; standard piecing and paper piecing, as well as all of the yardage requirements and instructions for both methods in various sizes! What a deal.

Anyhoo, this quilt is so fun, a fantastic challenge to my piecing skill, and so intricate compared to what I have been working on lately. I ran out of black, so now I am stuck waiting on fabric, but I am in love.Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3014054760942288678.post-30966954805788973652014-05-27T15:01:00.002-04:002014-05-27T15:01:44.205-04:00RadianceI finished another pattern! I drive by this lovely field of wildflowers at a farm on my way to work every day, and I knew it would be the perfect backdrop for my patchwork Leah Duncan Quilt. Does it not scream summer?
I am so pleased with how the photos turned out! Meadow is Leah Duncan's second line for Art Gallery Fabrics. I used a simple quilt construction for this one in order to let the fabric truly shine. It is a work of art on its own. Thanks Leah for such a great line!Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01401780805937910992noreply@blogger.com10
